Britomart Monument Akaroa

The stone monument on Green's Point (known to the Maori as Tahunatorea) was erected in 1898. The monument marks the spot on which the British raised their flag on 9 August 1840 to demonstrate to the French that New Zealand was already British. It was designed by Samuel Farr, a Christchurch architect who lived in Akaroa from 1850 (when he first arrived in New Zealand) until 1862.
The raising of the flag forestalled the arrival of the French naval corvette L'Aube by three days and of the French settlers led by the French whaling Captain Jean Langlois in the Comte de Paris by six. The settlement of Akaroa by the French went ahead but it was acknowledged that British sovereignty was in force.
