Little River is en-route between Chrischurch and Akaroa. Once the train came this far serving the timber industry which thrived on the heavily forested valley. Rail operation lasted from 1888 to 1962. The historic station survived and now houses a highly rated café, craft shop, information centre and historic displays. The embankment along which the train once ran has been developed as a rail trail acting as a walkway and cycleway, eventually all the way to Christchurch. Maps of the route can be found on the rail trail website.
