213 Manchester Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch, Christchurch City
1860 timber grocery store which just survived the earthquakes and was moved to clear ground on Manchester street.
The quakes exposed some genuine vintage construction in Rimu, Kauri and Matai, and nearly did away with the building, but it eventually was saved and moved. Possibly positioned a little close to the previously precarious Trinity Church, but that is now also restored and strengthened.
The significance of the two storey shop is immense to Cantabrians, all of whom will be familiar with the name Shand's Emporium. Not only was it one of the first stores in the city, it was always operated under the same name, and is linked with founding and business family, the Goughs.
It has needed a helping hand from Christchurch Heritage Trust and developers but is now reasonably comfortable in it's new position, complete with a covered walkway connecting it to Trinity (which is also known as the Octagon).
