109BAB Worcester Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch, Christchurch City
Cathedral Junction is the covered lane that is home of the Christchurch City Tram, and it is also a bit more than that to a city that has lost a lot.
Though trams trundled through here from the 1880s onward, they were eventually disestablished. When the tourist tramway stared, famed Christchurch motorcycle engineer turned property developer John Britten designed this pseudo-Victoriana arcade. It was stopped in it's tracks after his untimely 1995 death and eventually completed in 2000.
The arcade was earthquake damaged and closed between 2011 and 2013. In the rejuvenating city this is a calm and covered corner, tucked just out of sight of the still crumbling Cathedral. An apartment hotel adjoins, and the main tenants are eateries, including some fine dining.
The Tram stops at 17 stops around the city during the day, but it is important to book and get on here at base for the evening 'Tramway Restaurant' ride.
A popular attraction in the Junction is the Imagination Station, a Koha-based Lego play centre for kids. There are several cool retail and tourist businesses in Cathedral Junction including a booking station for tourist activities.
In line with their policy of occupying Heritage Buildings, Quest Apartments are upstairs from this attraction.
