Miller's Building Earthquake Casualty

Very modern for its time, this Bauhaus inspired modernist building, which originally had a factory on the upper floors and Millers department store below, was designed by G A J Hart, and dates from 1935. For children visiting the department store was a treat, as it had the first escalator in Christchurch. It also had a monster ice cream and soda bar. Millers was an earthquake victim. The Council's office are now in the remodeled former Post Office Building in Hereford Street.
