Christchurch Central Library Turanga

Here in old Cathedral Square has been built a grand five story replacement for the city's former library which did not survive the 2011 earthquakes. Lofty design objectives have been realised here by a team of Architectus and Schmidt Hammer Lassen, who pull influences from the landscape and Ngai Tahu values, striving to re-energise Cathedral Square, which is missing a Cathedral and has relinquished it's role as a bus hub.
Consultation led the team to consider pedestrian flow between the Square and Gloucester street, to create outdoor spaces on upper levels, and to bring in warm colourways familiar in Canterbury landscapes.

The new library, one of the anchor projects for the Christchurch rebuild, was opened in October 2018.
