170 Ida Valley-Omakau Road, Omakau-Ophir, Central Otago
The name is historic, the hotel a little less so. This is the 1937 Art Deco reinvention of Ophir's original stone Black's Hotel. It is going strong though and the hospitality here is still classic and full of character, a comfortable stop on the Otago Rail Trail venture, while checking out the Historic Sites of Ophir. It is also the place to eat. They serve famous Otago Cheese Rolls.
The whole town actually used to be called Black's, after the Black Brother runholders here, until it adopted it's biblical name during the goldrush.
So laugh with me now or cry with me now
As you tramp those memoried tracks
For they all lead down to Ophir Town
And the old time town of Blacks.
