Unnamed Road, One Tree Hill-Greenlane, Auckland
As Maungakiekie, One Tree Hill was fortified and cultivated by the Maori inhabitants of Tamaki-makau-rau (the Auckland isthmus). The largest pa in the district Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) was occupied from the fifteenth century until about 1730, when it was abandoned after local tribes were defeated in battle. Its complex of ramparts, terraces, and storage pits occupied about 40 acres.
The obelisk on the hill was raised by John Logan Campbell, the Father of Auckland, to demonstrate his respect for the Maori race. Sir John Logan Campbell, gifted Cornwall Park to the people of New Zealand in 1901. Campbell’s grave is also on the summit, but the landmark tree succumbed after being attacked in a political gesture. Their evidence of stone-age occupation in the middle of a modern city makes Auckland’s volcanic cones of exceptional historic interest.
Acacia Cottage, Auckland's oldest surviving building, is open to visitors and there is a visitor centre.
