164 Queen Street, Auckland, Auckland
Peter Beaven designed this office block in 1965. Along with two older buildings it forms the Canterbury Arcade from Queen Street through to High Street. Utilising modern materials and construction techniques Beaven introduced qualities he had admired in the streetscapes of European cities. The slim High Street facade has balconies, verandas, French windows, shutters and a Parisian garret-like penthouse. The other end of the Arcade is on Queen Street, and is of interest in it's own right. It was designed as a retail premises in 1913 by Wade and Wade. Both this facade and the Beaven one received an upgrade in 2010.
