Mesopotamia Station

Mesopotamia is probably the most famous of New Zealand's high-country sheep stations. Samuel Butler, the author of the satirical novel Erewhon (1870), was the sheep station run-holder at 'Mesopotamia' from June 1860 until July 1864.
Today the station offers high country accommodation. Nearby Erewhon offers tours, and Mt Potts station has a lodge and Erewhon Park Skifield.

The surrounding area provided the backdrop to many scenes from the Lord of the Rings, featuring Mt Sunday as Edoras.
