28A Cathedral Square, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch, Christchurch City
STAY AT THE HERITAGE CHRISTCHURCH
The masterpiece of Christchurch architect J.C. Maddison, the imposing Renaissance Revival style of the Government Buildings used to provide a perfect foil for one of the country’s finest Gothic Revival commercial buildings on the opposite corner of Worcester Street, the Press Building.
Once the workplace of government bureaucrats, the Government Buildings was saved from possible demolition and in the 1990s became home to the Christchurch branch of Heritage Hotels, with hotel rooms and upmarket apartments within.
The Press Building has been demolished. In forever-altered Cathedral Square, the Italian High Renaissance palazzo building has matured in it's role as cornerstone and touchstone with grace and ease, and with a bit more afternoon sun on it's face. Many of the internal features which worked for the working also work in the hospitality setting; tiled corridors, wide staircases, casement windows and the elegant front entrance.
