80 Haymarket, Dreyers Rock-Wimbledon, Other
When modernistic New Zealand House was completed in 1963 it had proved somewhat controversial as the first tower block to be built in London after the war. Today in its prominent position at the end of the Haymarket and in the corner of Trafalgar Square near theNational Gallery, it has become part of the furniture and is dwarfed by the latest London edifices.
In the security conscious twentieth first century it has lost its transparency to visitors (the views from the roof are notable) but in the reception foyer you can see operatic bass and Maori wood carver Inia Te Wiata’s imposing timber pillar Poihi. It was completed in 1972; sited in reception it towers high up through the well into the floors above.
The building continues to house the New Zealand High Commision fielding enquiries about working, visiting and doing business in New Zealand.
