From the Boer War on thousands of New Zealand soldiers, sailors and airman have served with British forces. The New Zealand Memorial to them sits on a traffic island at Hyde Park corner along with the Wellington Arch and other memorials. Sculptor Paul Dibble and John Hardwick-Smith of Athfield Architects had their design accepted by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage. It has 16 bronze 'standards', cast in Lower Hutt which have patinated surfaces embellished with New Zealand symbols: texts, patterns and small sculptures.
