Objectspace

By Celia Walker

Objectspace has been singing the praises of our material culture since 2004, a valuable public gallery for the exhibition of arts that have the value of making at their heart. The shift from the Ponsonby Road heritage building that had been the gallery’s home since inception has enabled an expansion of its core purpose of exhibiting craft and applied art, adding architecture to the mix, and an architectural rendering of the new building brings this all together.

The award-winning transformation of the 1980s warehouse building by RTAStudio has not entirely erased its industrial beginnings, but the boxy simple finishing provides a neutral foil that gives primacy to the exhibits. There are four exhibition spaces, including two main galleries, and a projecting canopy over the courtyard at the front of the building that enables larger outdoor works a semi-sheltered outdoor setting. Head to an evening event to experience the best view of the white aluminium clad façade of the overhang, when the backlit panels project out the geometric structure.
