44 Pollen Street, Newton, Auckland
This mixed-use development planned around ‘collective individuality' is a prototype for how Auckland could accommodate higher densities in the future. The development is 'anchored' with a Countdown supermarket. The site was once home to the DYC Vinegar factory. The complex includes 20 high quality apartments; the Aria complex.
The half hectare site has been subdivided into over 30 plots with individual ownership and independent building design. Central design control, overseen by an architects panel, is minimal. Adjacent lots are required to be designed by different architects.
Inspired by aBorneo-Sporenburg near Amsterdam which in turn is modelled on traditional Dutch housing the Jordaan, a lively Amsterdam inner city quarter, Thus the model is Amsterdam canal housing.
Owners of the Countdown supermarket, Progessive Enterprises engaged Isthmus as the master planners.
