11 Elizabeth Street, Collingwood, Tasman

Collingwood Courthouse

This quiet corner of the world was once very busy. The discovery of gold in the 1850s brought miners to the district and with it the need for law and order. Later in the 1870s coal miners came to town reinforcing the need. A courthouse was built in 1882 but in 1901 it was replaced by anew building designed by John Campbell though not in the Edwardian Baroque style he later favoured. It was lucky enough to escape a disastrous fire in the town in 1904.

Today it is a stylish cafe.
