790 Collingwood-Bainham Main Road, Rockville, Tasman

Devils Boots

You guessed it, this is limestone country. And thanks to the way this particular rock erodes, once it is uplifted or exposed from it's undersea origins, there are an infinite formations that might result. Here on the roadside near the junction with Bainham Main Road, are a pair of beauties named The Devil's Boots. The devil may only know how long they have been here, but the geologists estimate between 24 - 33 million years ago, not long. We are also not sure what name Maori gave to these structures, but the Pakeha attached the name Devil's Boots and have been taking photos of them since. Meanwhile the district in which they live is a less imaginative 'Rockville.'

Upriver a bit are Salisbury Falls, also a geological feature, and the Aorere Gold Fossicking Areas.
