In keeping with one of Taupo's claims to fame this museum is for the dedicated angler but there are also an early settlers exhibition and Maori carvings and artefacts. There is a 10 minute audio-visual history of the area A special exhibit on permanent display is the 100% Pure New Zealand Ora - Garden of Wellbeing', winner of a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show, 2004. The garden has been made a “Garden of National Significance’ by the NZ Gardens Trust.
One display focuses on the numerous powerful volcanic eruptions which have shaped the caldera volcano now filled by Lake Taupo and the cycle of eruptions and volcanic mudflows from Mt Ruapehu's crater lake in nearby Tongariro National Park.
