140 Hyde Avenue, Richmond Heights, Waipahihi, Taupo
The drive through reserve of 35 ha was formed in 1966 to create a park of native forest trees and plants and to be a refuge for birdlife.
Its walks are lined with many species of native trees. It has an alpine garden, lemonwood walk and 2000 rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias that are a blaze of colour, especially in October. There are beautiful lake and mountain views from the one-way road, walkways and attractive picnic areas.
Run by volunteers, it is still a work in progress, but an increasingly beautiful and popular place to visit. They are running pest eradication and continual planting schemes, and welcome any support.
