2-8 Maginnity Street, Te Aro-Wellington Central, Wellington City
The architect of this fine building, constructed in 1925-6, was Gray Young of Morten,Young. Wellesley was the family name of the Duke of Wellington. The classical neo-Georgian style was reputedly chosen to reflect Georgian times when the Duke had his career. The building has Category One Heritage classification.
The interior is little changed since the building opened as a gentleman's club. Because of this it provides an insight to another era. Now it is a highly recommended restaurant and boutique hotel, the club having integrated with the nearby Wellington Club in 2014. Notable clubs still in operation are in Auckland, Invercargill, and Christchurch.
