90 Salamanca Road, Kelburn, Wellington City
An early Wellington luxury apartment block (1928) built of reinforced concrete. There is one flat on each floor. The architect was Llewellyn E Williams. The flats have been earthquake strengthened and the interiors meticulously restored to the original 1920s style under the guidance of their owner Susan Price. They are used by Victoria University for distinguished visitors.
Chevening was built for Emma Margaret Rainforth who was a senior maths teacher at Wellington Girls’ College. The building has recently been placed on its heritage register by the Historic Places Trust. There is no traceable link but Chevening House, is a large country house in Kent, in south east England. It is an official residence of the Foreign Secretary.
In 2019 Ms Price gifted Chevening to Heritage New Zealand.
