Listen to our Audioguide to learn about crossing the Crown Range by vehicle.

New Zealand’s highest main road was, in the past, used by the more intrepid traveller only, as it was rough and unsealed, narrow and winding and very dusty in summer. Now, fortunately, it is fully sealed and a joy to drive on. It is suitable for campervans, and is used by shuttle buses for a fast trip to Queenstown. From Wanaka you drive through the Cardrona Valley alongside the Cardrona River.

There is little evidence of the once booming township where miners searched for gold in the 1860s. You can, however, stop for lunch or a drink at the historic Cardrona Hotel. After you leave the hotel, the road climbs up amidst tussock- covered hills to the 1121m summit. As you descend, make use of the parking areas to stop and view the magnificent scenery - the zigzagging nature of the road requires full concentration!

Spread out below you is the spectacular Wakatipu/Arrow Basin surrounded by craggy mountains.
