Maori Point Road, Tarras, Central Otago
Crossing over the Lindis Pass from Canterbury into Central Otago can provide impressive opportunities for photographs.
At the top the wide hills reveal several viewpoints, the Memorial to Red Deer, and the entrance to a fancy new lodge named The Lindis. Basic camping is allowed at a roadside site named The Geordie and in the grounds of the Old Lindis Pass Hotel, where the ruins are a centrepiece.
Then, you arrive at the small township of Tarras with its school, garage and shop/cafe. The pine trees on a local property near the swift-flowing Clutha River provided the setting for the exciting scene from the first film when Arwen rides to the Ford of Bruinen with Frodo.
