The Northern Explorer Rail Service

The Northern Explorer train is a daily rail service operating between Wellington, the harbour capital, and Auckland, through the heart of the North Island. In just one day, you pass through fertile rolling farmland, lush forests, across the volcanic plateau of the central North Island, over stunning river gorges and sprawling plains and through a host of small, out of the way, rural settlements. The Northern Explorer Route passes over the Hapuawhenua Viaduct, Makatote Viaduct and the Raurimu Spiral. It also stops at Taumarunui on the Main Trunk Line.
