49 Brown Street, Dunedin Central, Dunedin Central, Dunedin City
This suburban property was the set of the 1999 New Zealand cult film 'Scarfies'. The black comedy thriller (directed by Robert Sarkies and starring a young Taika Waititi) tells the story of student flatting gone awry. Its soundtrack is a time-capsule of the iconic 90's Dunedin music scene. The villa was once a quintessential student flat: old, cold, ramshackle and rundown, but has now been renovated.
For a 'Scarfies' experience, drive by the house then visit local music venues including The Cook, Dog with Two Tails and Inch bar, or head to a Highlander's rugby game at Forsyth Barr stadium. Of course in the Scarfies days, rugby took place at the also old, cold and rundown Carisbrook.
