Whangamata is a resort town (population about 4,000) almost entirely bounded by river estuaries and the sea. Where there is no water there are bush covered hills. During the summer holidays the surf culture proves an attraction to the teen-aged hordes with entertainment focussed around the surf life saving club. The beach is safe and popular with families.

Several bush tracks particularly the walk to Wentworth Falls offer a diversion from the beach.
