Sinclair Miners Cottage

Southland Museums

Nightcaps being a mining town, here stands Sinclair Cottage, upheld locally as a virtually perfect example of a New Zealand miner's home.
Nightcaps was not part of the 1860s Gold rush, but a steady player in the coal industry, and remains so. This is a 1905 coal miner's cottage, representing the ultimate in comfort to the families who resided here, given that many of the districts early miners lived in tents all year round including in snow.

For all it's cuteness, this cottage has done some serious service, as it became the local hospital during the 1918 Influenza pandemic, which Nightcaps strangely suffered more than seven times the national average of fatalities.

This cute little cottage has been fully restored by the Nightcaps Heritage Trust can be visited by passing a character test and borrowing the key from the Trading Post in Nightcaps.
