Forsyth Barr Stadium

Dunedin's state of the art Twenty first Century stadium replaced historic Carisbrook in 2011 as the venue for national and international rugby. It is also capable of hosting rugby league, basketball, netball and football as well as conferences, concerts and other events. It is the world's first permanently enclosed grassed stadium and can seat up to 30,000 in the main arena, as well as providing a variety of indoor function venues. A transparent roof of space age materials provides sunlight to the pitch and keeps the rain from the players and spectators, while cutting edge irrigation is used to keep turf in international level playing condition.

The stadium is a walkable two kilometres from Dunedin's central business district where legendary after-match festivities occur.

The architects were Jasmax Limited, Richard Breslin and Populous in Association. Though the Forsyth Barr Stadium, like many large scale public buildings in New Zealand was planned and conceived amid skepticism and funding uncertainty, the crowds trounced the critics when it proved a gracious yet exciting host venue during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
