Poolburn Dam - Rohan

The Poolburn Dam is reached from Ida Valley in the Maniototo. Once you leave the Ida Valley Road the way is unsealed and rough. No suitable transport? The rocky tors around Alexandra are the next best thing, or you could walk part of the Rail Trail from Auripo to Lauder to get the atmosphere of Rohan-type countryside. (Stay at the Commercial Hotel at Omakau - backpackers and campervans, too - and the owner will provide a free drop-off and pick-up service!)
