145 Camp Road, Larnachs Castle, Pukehiki, Dunedin City
Let NZPlaces be the authority to advise, Larnach Castle though self-described as New Zealand's only castle is not a real castle but a great house in a rural setting. It was built for a wealthy 19th century banker, importer and politician, William Larnach who took his life in Parliament House in 1898. Larnach Castle was built in stages in the 1870s and 1880s. Its style manages somehow to combine Scottish Baronial with distinctively Australian features. The building has been lovingly restored over many years and now gives a vivid impression of the sometimes troubled life of a prominent colonial family. Larnach "Castle" is in private ownership and open daily.
Admission charge applies. It can be visited individually or as part of an Otago Peninsula Tour. Visitors are well advised to read the account ofLarnach's fantastic lifeon Te Ara.
