55 Sandymount Road, Sandymount, Dunedin City
In the nineteenth century, lime burning was an important local industry in many areas, producing burnt lime as a fertiliser and a raw material for plaster. The Sandymount lime kiln, built in 1865, is one of the oldest but also one of the best preserved kilns in the country and looks wonderfully picturesque in its hilly setting. From the roadside there is a good view of the Riddel Kiln while the Sandymount (McDonald Kiln) is just a three minute walk down the valley directly opposite on a public use track.
