Duke's Nose/Kairara Rocks Track, Taupo Bay, Far North
Duke's Nose, also known as Kairara Rocks, is the high point in Ranfurly Bay, Whangaroa Harbour. As well as the area being of historical significance, the view from the top of the rocks is famously beautiful. Te Ara describes the history of Ranfurly Bay, and DOC has further information including how best to get on top of this rock.
Two other strange titles are associated with this place, one is nearby Seasick Bay where whaling took place, and the second is the name of the immigrant ship which brought the first settlers here in 1865, the Lancashire Witch. The most significant historical incident associated with this bay would be the 1809 burning of 'The Boyd' by local Iwi who objected to the way a chieftains brother had been treated as a crew member.
It has always been a thing to do to climb the Duke's nose, these photos are from Henry Winkelmann is from 1905. There are other outstanding rockclimbing sites throughout the harbour.
A description and a photograph are always welcome at NZPlaces.
