1B Bunny Street, Te Aro-Wellington Central, Wellington City
A fine example of art deco - and in 1953 accommodation for the young Queen Elizabeth - the Waterloo was a luxurious hotel originally built for railway travellers. Designed by Cyril Hawthorn Mitchell for New Zealand Breweries, the Waterloo opened its doors in 1937. It was closed and fell into decline between 1987 and 1991 but, after restoration, now provides beds as the Downtown Backpackers. Many original features remain and it is considered earthquake-safe. It has a NZ Heritage Category II classification.
