25 Lady Elizabeth Lane, Te Aro-Wellington Central, Wellington City
The PwC Centre on this site designed by Athfield Architects was completed in May 2018.
It replaces an earlier scheme which promised to be a significant addition to the waterfront scene but did not survive the strident protestations of Wellington Waterfront Watch. Designed by Studio Pacific Architecture it was to be base-isolated, with an exo-skeleton offering an increased strength and robustness through the dia-grid bracing. A public winter garden on the ground floor would have provide a sheltered space to view the harbour on an inclement Wellington day.
Unfortunately the built scheme does not have a winter garden.
It does however have an innovative base isolated foundation design with over 1,200 piles forming the building's foundations. They are interlocked together to create a cellular concrete wall structure, which is a type of ground improvement designed to prevent liquefaction and mitigate the potential for lateral spreading.
