100 Symes Road, Fruitlands, Central Otago
Fruitlands, now all but deserted, has a number of historic structures, some half in ruins. One historic building has been successfully restored as a café, gallery and place to stay. It is now known as the Speargrass Inn.
In the hills about 1 km above, two mining brothers, John and Andrew Mitchell, built a simple stone cottage, completed in 1904, using stone-working techniques from their native Shetland Islands. "The building is arguably one of the best examples of the stone mason's art still surviving from the turn of the century, or before, in New Zealand."
