Fruitlands-Roxburgh Road, Fruitlands, Central Otago
Men searching for gold lived in harsh conditions. This was the site of an early gold settlement. The monument is a memorial to an unknown number of gold miners who perished in the 1863 snows on the Old Man Range. Also here is the Gorge Creek Miners shelter, no more than a stack of stone with a doorway, backing into a cave like space. A clear indication of the quality of the environment and conditions which mean we now have a memorial.
