161 Palmerston Street, Renwick-Kawatiri, Other
The Buller is the oldest district on the West Coast, having been founded, during the goldrush days, in 1861. This is the site of the 1876 first Buller County Chambers, but the building is obviously younger, belonging, roundly, to the Moderne period. New Zealand Post celebrated the building's roundness in a stamp set of only four which celebrated Art Deco in New Zealand in 1999.
It was completed in 1941 and remains intact despite cyclones, floods, earthquakes and other events. No longer needed for administration, the chambers are presently the happy home for a community medical centre.
This was the regional government seat, the town Council being housed in Westport Municipal Chambers, two blocks away, which was completed in the same year. Westport must have then run out of money as a planned Town Hall has never been built.
