77 Courtenay Place, Te Aro, Wellington City
From the outside, Henry Eli White’s 1912 building has a comparatively restrained Classical façade. Its wonderfully decorated interior boasts ornate plasterwork that make it one of the finest of New Zealand’s older theatres. St James was once at risk. It was bought by the Wellington City Council then became home to the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
It is currently out of action for earthquake strengthening.
When it reopens you will again be able to visit the fully licensed Café in the expansive foyer of the Theatre and in fine weather you sit outside in Courtenay Place to have your coffee. Upstairs the space is used for exhibitions.
