Social enterprise in Lyttelton is leading to a commercial property development which includes Cohousing. Known as *The Hive,*the building is designed to fill a site known as Colletts Corner, once home to the Empire Hotel. Its design is the result of two years of community consultation and an architectural competition. In a New Zealand first it will be financed through equity crowd funding. Camia Young, the founder of the Christchurch based property companyOhu calls the exercise Compassionate Capitalism
The co-housing spaces which will sold to private owners will be on the upper levels while the design requirements of a public bathing area, cinema, and retail space will in the basement and on the ground floor.
The Hive will be a significant feature in the Lyttleton townscape which was ravaged by the earthquake in 2011.
