82 Mangakahia Road, Maungatapere, Whangarei
The many stone walls around Whangarei are some of the oldest surviving man-made structures in the region. Built with casual labour over the period from the 1850’s to the 1920’s, they were constructed to clear the land of volcanic stone and make way for agricultural and horticultural development. There are approximately 156 kilometres of stone walls.
Dry stone walls are now recognised by the Whangarei District Council in a Dry Stone Wall Project and their repair and maintenance are encouraged for the character they add to the district.
