A H Reed Memorial Kauri Park

TU TIKA TOURS - A MAORI CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

The bush in this park is a significant remnant of the original kauri forests that were once extensive throughout Northland. A section of the track is a canopy walkway traversing a majestic group of kauri trees which are up to 3 metres in diameter and 500 years old, and all of the other foliage that goes to make up a Kauri Forest Eco-system. There are several well maintained tracks, one of which leads to a beautiful 23 metre waterfall. Generally easy walking and suitable for all ages.

There is also a connection with the Hatea Walkway towards the city.

Alfred Hamish Reed (1875 - 1885) who grew up in the Parahaki area, a prolific writer on New Zealand themes and the founder of a prominent New Zealand publishing house. His story is long and fascinating, through illness and poverty and war, from from the gumfields of Northland, to Auckland as a typwriter technician and to Dunedin, always in connection with Methodist Church, Reed became a publisher and then an author later in life.
