10km south of Hokitika, signposted off main highway
The lake is part of an inland water highway - Hokitika to Ross, enjoyed today by canoeists and yachties.
One of the paddle steamers which plied the lake has been restored and is on display. A pleasant picnic area and DOC campsite.
Short walks are signposted around the lake. They are named, Bellbird walk, Jum Michel track and Mananui Tramline and none taking more than 20 minutes.
Also on the highway is a surprising 90 degree corner which is in order to go around the lake, and the spot many feel fondly towards, the famous and classic Lake Mahinapua Hotel. A West Coast landmark since 1905, the pub was recently threatened with closure but new management has tourist busses rolling in and loving it.
