Okarito School House

The place to stay in Okarito.

The only place to stay actually, or it was for a long time until a few B and Bs popped up.

This 1860s school building was moved from it's orginal damp site in 1901 and rebuilt here. As the schoolhouse for the town of 5000 in the 1860s, it was busting at the seams. As the post goldrush population dwindled away, it eventually closed in the 1950s. When Okarito was virtually uninhabited, from the 1960s and 1970s, this became the bunkbed hostel for visitors, and had a full make over in 1990.

Now managed by the Department of Conservation, this is where to stay in Okarito. Like it or not. But it is very likeable, with 12 bunk beds, an interesting history and even electric heaters.
