104 Fifth Street, Kumara Junction, Westland
Kumara is another former gold mining town. Apart from the annual race day its biggest claim to fame is that it was once once the home of the most famous West Coaster, Richard John Seddon, Premier of the reforming Liberal Government from 1893 until his death in 1906.
In the cemetery up on the hill to the south of the town the grave stones are testament to the distance from their birthplaces of the town's settlers - many of whom came from Ireland.
Kumara is famous for its horse racing event. The Racecourse hosts a popular race meeting in January each year when competition takes place for the Kumara Gold Nuggets. The Race Course provides a base for competitors and their support teams at the start of the annual Coast to Coast multisportendurance race.
Kumara is a way point on the West Coast Wilderness cycling trail; an easy three day trip which goes from Greymouth to Ross.
