42-52 Willis Street, Te Aro-Wellington Central, Wellington City
Willis Central is a sustainable development by the Wellington developer Ian Cassells with Telecom (now Spark) as the anchor tenant. The buildings are designed to house 1700 Telecom employees and feature active chilled beam cooling technologies, energy efficient lighting and solar panels. Willis Central has a thermally active exterior. The architects are Architecture + (Stuart Gardyne) who designed Conservation House in Manners Street. Two seismically separated towers fronting on to Boulcott and Willis Streets are joined by a ten storey atrium. A pedestrian link through the building takes the public between the two streets. The 'ribbon' theme of the glass cladding on these street fronts is echoed in the main reception area on Willis Street. The stone front and a wonderful staircase from the 1913 MaCarthy building have been included in the design which has also been influenced by the floor heights of an the existing concrete structure of an 80’s office block which has been incorporated. A branch of the Mojo coffee chain "Mojo Central" occupies the ground floor atrium.
