Oriental Bay Townscape

The townscape of Oriental Bay is unique in New Zealand with contributions to its architecture coming in phases since Victorian times. In the audio guide Tommy Honey reflects on what makes Oriental Bay special.

In the 1890s Oriental Bays was already a favoured place to live:

***ORIENTAL BAY, *WELLINGTON - Steaming out of the harbour of Wellington one passes on the right a pretty bend in the natural configuration of the harbour called Oriental Bay. A road runs close to the water's edge while another winds its way over the jutting promontory forming part of the basin. Many pretty residences with their well-kept, gardens adorn the bay, and the green back-ground of grass-covered hills helps to give a pretty picture to remember as the ship ploughs her way out,- to the generally rather turbulent waters of the Straits.
