Freyberg Pool and Clyde Quay Marina

The modernist structure of the Freyberg public swimming pool with its butterfly roof and glass walls was designed by King & Dawson (Jason Smith) and completed in 1963. Its model is said to be the Pampulha Yacht Club of 1942 designed by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.
The pool sits besides the Clyde Quay Marina, the home of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club. The Marina was established here in 1902 - the boat sheds date from 1905-6. The heated indoor public pool has spas, sauna and an associated fitness centre. The North (Outside) wall of the Freyberg Pool is a climbing wall.
In 2015 the Freyberg Building was given a Category 1 listing by Heritage New Zealand.

War hero Bernard Ferguson, who went to Wellington College, won both junior and senior national swimming titles.
