25 Courtenay Place, Mount Victoria, Wellington City
The face of the Paramount says it all. With a nod to the past and the future, this art house cinema has nearly reached its centenary. In 1929 the proud young Paramount was Wellingtons go-to place for the first 'talkie' movie, named Street Angel. In the 50s and 60s the Paramount milkbar and cafeteria became a popular hangout for young and hip Wellingtonians. Still standing tall, strong and elegant, and now heritage-listed, the Paramount is proud home of the Wellington Film Society and the local owners place a strong emphasis on showing New Zealand films. The venue's versatility is demonstrated by also hosting Opera Society events and private functions, in the 430 seat Auditorium or smaller Bergman and Brooks theatres, complemented by the spacious and stylish lobby. Location has always been an asset to the Paramount, in the midst of Wellington's vibrant Courtenay Place entertainment area.
