2 Courtenay Place, Mount Victoria, Wellington City
The Hannah Playhouse provided a permanent home for Wellington's first professional theatre, Downstage. Its exposed concrete construction is true to the 'New Brutalism' style current at the time (1973). Ron Parker and James Beard were the architects with Downstage designer Raymond Boyce acting as a consultant. Downstage Theatre has now closed (September 2013). The Playhouse continues to be used for theatre and other performing arts experiences under the auspices of the Wellington Museums Trust. It is currently the Wellington base and performance venue for the Capital E National Theatre for Children. The Tasting Room, a Restaurant cum sports bar selling fine food with plenty of red meat and Monteiths Ales occupies the ground floor on Courtenay Place. Despite the beer branding it has a wine cellar.
