Te Aro Pa papakainga

Wellington City Community Halls

Papakainga is a form of housing which occurs on multiply-owned Maori or ancestral land. In 2014 Wellington gained such a development. Papakainga translates as 'nurturing place to return to'.

Roger Walker designed ten three-bedroom units and four one-bedroom units, in two blocks separated by a shared garden to provide affordable housing on a block of land which has over 1,000 owners. The housing is available to people with links to the Te AroPa once sited on the Wellington waterfront.
